The truck has a old pioneer head unit in it now. Will the old harness work with newer radios? If so would it only work with pioneer units?

The best way to switch out the radio would be to see if the previous owner used an adaptor harness the first time to switch the radios. If they did, then you can unwire that one and add it to your new radio's pigtail. The likelihood that the wire harness match is very slim, and you don't know if it's pins right,, if it plugs in at all. Manufacturers change plugs on most models every year or so, as they are now cross-brand compatible.
