I want to put an amp and sub in my truck I already have a aftermarket head unit. Can I wire the power wire for the amp directly off the battery to the amp?

If I understand you correctly, yes most all cases you will run a main power wire to the battery for amp power. Be sure to fuse 6in away from the battery.
